Dr. Sumaya Al Blooshi: Advancing UAE Nursing Leadership on the Global Stage

Dr. Sumaya Al Blooshi, President of the Emirates Nursing Association, ENA-UAE, Director of Nursing at Emirates Health Services (EHS), and Chair of the National Committee for Nursing and Midwifery Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention, continues to champion the UAE’s role in global health through her leadership and commitment to advancing nursing excellence. Joining her were key ENA representatives: Dr. Fatima Al Rifaei, Board Member and representative to the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) Nursing and Midwifery Advisory Group; Dr. Safa Al Musfata, Vice President of ENA. Each played a vital role in amplifying the voice of nursing both regionally and internationally.

In 2022, Dr. Al Blooshi became the first Emirati to be inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), one of the highest international honors in the nursing profession. Her fellowship recognizes her significant contributions to healthcare policy, innovation in practice, and efforts to align nursing with national and global health priorities. As a Fellow, she joins an elite network of over 2,900 nursing leaders committed to transforming health systems through evidence-based practice and strategic policy influence.

Further underscoring her international engagement, Dr. Al Blooshi participated in the 2024 Global Partners Meeting (GPM) for Nursing and Midwifery formerly known as the Triad Meeting held from May 22–24 in Geneva. Alongside Chief Nursing Officers and leaders of National Nursing Associations from across the world, she presented the UAE’s national case study, which was developed in response to the State of the World’s Nursing (SoWN) report. Her presentation highlighted how the report’s findings informed the UAE National Strategy for Nursing and Midwifery 2022–2026, demonstrating a strong commitment to workforce development and nursing leadership.

Dr. Al Blooshi emphasized the importance of cohesive collaboration among national stakeholders, regional partners, and emerging talent to build a resilient and empowered nursing workforce across the region. On May 28, during her visit to Geneva, she also had the honor of meeting Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al-Hussein, President of the Jordanian Nursing Council, along with Her Excellency Dr. Rowaida Al-Maaitah. Their discussion focused on strategies to enhance the appeal of the nursing profession in the UAE and promote best practices in nursing within Emirates Health Services.

Dr. Al Blooshi commended HRH Princess Muna’s longstanding advocacy for nursing on both the regional and global levels and expressed her appreciation for the insightful exchange with members of the Jordanian Nursing Council.

These accomplishments reflect not only Dr. Al Blooshi’s leadership but also the UAE’s growing influence in shaping the future of global health through the advancement of nursing and midwifery.

Dr. Sumaya AlBlooshi, in her capacity as President of the Emirates Nursing Association (ENA) and Head of the National Nursing Association (NNA) at the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) and Director of Nursing at Emirates Health Services (EHS), had the honor of participating in the prestigious Global Partners Meeting (GPM) for Nursing and Midwifery formerly known as the Triad Meeting held from 22nd to 24th May 2024 in Geneva. Guided by a national vision of excellence in nursing and midwifery, and drawing upon her leadership role, Dr. AlBlooshi emphasized the importance of unified collaboration among national stakeholders, regional leaders, and emerging talents to strengthen and empower the nursing workforce across the region.
